I always thought it would be much easier to cook with less ingredients  but when we (Avant Garde Cookies) decided to cook with 5 ingredients or less for this week’s theme I was totally blank not knowing what to cook. The frantic search and counting number of ingredients in a recipe was quite tedious and I admit, I found it way harder to cook with less ingredients.I am a person who believes “The more the merrier” like more friends, more food, more fun…you get the idea, right? The good part of the search was I found many interesting recipes during my search and that opens a new horizon for my kitchen experiments.

The challenging part of this theme was to find the right recipe that’s easy to do, quick, and one that my family would like. The last criteria is quite challenging as it’s quite hard to please the food critics in my house. Luckily this recipe (taken from Uma’s Culinaryworld) is the quick microwave version of the laborious stove top method and the taste cuts quite close to the authentic one. I decorated the pedas with almonds and some sugar pearls for the eyes. My son called it cute and my daughter called it an owl and I don’t know what you might call these pedas but I can guarantee they taste awesome, the proof is my container was emptied in 2 days.

Doodh Peda (Milk Sweet)

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Yield: 20 to 25 pieces

  • Sweetened Condensed Milk - 1 tin (396 gm/14 oz)
  • Milk Powder - 1 1/2 cups
  • Unsalted Butter - 4 tbsp
  • Cardamom powder -- 1/2 tsp
  • Saffron/Kesar - few strands (optional)
  • Roasted Almonds -- about 20 to 25 --- for decoration (optional)
  • Sugar Pearls for decoration (optional)

  1. Take a microwave safe bowl, melt butter in microwave for about 1 minute. Add milk powder, condensed milk to the bowl and mix well with melted butter. Microwave for 3 minutes stirring after every 1 minute.
  2. Mix cardamom powder, saffron to the milk mixture and microwave for 1 more minute. Let the peda cool.
  3. The timing may vary from one microwave to another, so add or minus a minute making sure that the peda isn't too dry. The picture below is not that attractive, but I wanted to show the texture of the peda mix just after cooking, I know it looks little wet, but believe me, they harden once they cool.
  4. After the peda is completely cool enough to handle, grease your hands with butter or ghee and divide the mix into 20 to 25 equal parts.
  5. Make a smooth ball and flatten each part into flat disc. Make a thumbprint on the center of the disc. Gently press an almond in the enter, if using. If you're using sugar pearls, decorate the pedas with two pearls for the eyes. Enjoy!!!

Store the pedas in an airtight container and refrigerate. The pedas tend to harden if refrigerated, so remove the pedas an hour before serving. Any nut powder can be mixed with the pedas while cooking. These pedas can be cooked in stove top in low flame. I found the sweetness was a little bit on the high side, so I'm planning to use 2 cups of milk powder the next time I'm making them.
